Managing Editor (full-time, temporary), Institute for the Study of the Ancient World
The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW), a research and exhibitions center which is part of New York University, seeks a full-time Managing Editor for Exhibitions for roughly a three-month period beginning on or around March 1, 2012. The Managing Editor is responsible for overseeing and managing academic exhibition catalogues to accompany each exhibition. The Managing Editor is also responsible for overseeing the content creation, design, and production of all graphics, didactics, and marketing materials for the exhibitions. Reports to Director of Exhibitions and Chief Curator.
Principal Duties
Producing scholarly exhibition catalogues to accompany the exhibitions. Duties may include: working with Director of Exhibitions and Chief Curator and guest curators (if applicable) in creating the upcoming exhibitions catalogue outline and scope; creating and managing budgets for upcoming catalogue production; presenting the upcoming catalogue to our publisher (with Director of Exhibitions and Chief Curator); executing agreements with up to twelve outside contributors; developing and managing of a comprehensive time-line for all contributors, editors, and designers; working with museum lenders in obtaining and/or organizing object photography for the catalogue.
Producing and managing all exhibition graphics and didactics. Duties may include: working closely with Director of Exhibitions and Chief Curator, Assistant Curator, guest curators, and designers in developing the content structure and layout of exhibition didactics and graphics for upcoming exhibition(s); creating and managing graphics and didactics budgets; developing and managing time-lines for content delivery; managing all content and copy-editing of didactic materials; overseeing design proposals for didactics and graphics; and preparing for pre-production and production of all exhibition related didactic and graphic materials which may include large-scale text panels and banners, object labels for cases, transfers, laminated guides, pamphlets, flyers, posters, invitations, postcards, website content, PR/marketing materials, and email blasts.
Experience/Education
At least three years experience at a cultural institution,
with publications experience. MA preferable.
Knowledge
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. High
proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel; basic working
knowledge of Adobe Suite (including Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, and
InDesign) is a plus.
Compensation commensurate with experience and flexibility with days in office.

Princeton University Art Museum
Associate Director for Publications and Communications
Position Description
The Associate Director for Publications and Communications
directs the development and implementation of the Princeton
University Art Museum's robust program of print and digital
publications, ranging from scholarly publications about the
collections and major exhibition catalogues to the annual Record
(the Museum's scholarly journal), the quarterly full-color
magazine, a hierarchy of publications that accompany exhibitions,
special events, and educational programs (brochures, handouts,
interpretive object labels, signs, wall texts and banners,
invitations, and press releases and announcements, as well as
public relations and marketing tools.
The Associate Director is responsible for establishing Museum guidelines and standards relative to all use of the written word and of the Museum's graphic presentation, including publication guidelines, procedures, style manuals, and authors' contracts for curators, visiting scholars, outside authors, and student interns, and for ensuring that these standards are maintained.
Responsibilities include all phases associated with a publications house: developing production schedules, preparing budgets, hiring and supervising staff as well as outside vendors and consultants, editing, design, press checks, marketing, distribution, and fulfillment. Specifically, the position also oversees the Museum's co-publishing and distribution relationships with Yale University Press and other publishers.
The Associate Director for
Publications and Communications is a member of the Museum's
senior management team and reports to the Director of the Museum.
S/he supervises four full-time employees, including two associate
or assistant editors and positions in public relations/marketing
and graphic design; a changing roster of consultants and
contractors; summer and academic year interns; and professional
and student contributors to publications and exhibitions. S/he is
responsible for hiring and supervising the work of a number of
outside vendors and consultants, including scholars, freelance
editors, indexers, designers, photographers, typesetters, and
printers.
The principal duties of the Associate Director for Publications
and Communications are to develop and guide the Museum's
publications program, producing work of scholarly excellence and
accessibility. S/he must have the vision and expertise to
understand the Museum's overall priorities in order to determine
an appropriate balance of activities in a complex department the
supports the breadth of the Museum's activities, particularly in
the curatorial and educational areas. S/he adjudicates across
competing goals and needs, sets department priorities, supervises
staff in three operational areas, prepares budgets, and produces
and oversees schedules, including complex production schedules
for major scholarly publications. As Associate Director for
Publications and Communications, s/he determines scholarly
readers and editors, graphic designers, and printers who are best
suited for each project.
In addition to serving as a
member of the Museum's senior management team, the Associate
Director for Publications and Communications serves widely in a
team-based environment, including as a member of the
communications, events, and exhibitions teams, and plays a key
role in delivering the Museum's complex content to a wide-ranging
audience including members of the University community, scholars
worldwide, and visitors to the Museum and the University campus.
Essential Qualifications
The Associate Director for Publications and Communications must
have excellent experience and skills in both substantive and
copyediting and in project management. S/he must possess
extensive experience in managing all phases of production of
printed and electronic publications. S/he must be a superb
communicator in all forms, and be extremely well organized, able
to juggle many tasks simultaneously, and to work under the
pressure of multiple deadlines. The Associate Director for
Publications and Communications should be an experienced senior
level manager. A Masters degree and more than ten
years work experience are required.
Finalist candidates will be required to take a copyediting test.
Writing samples will be required.
Preferred Qualifications
An advanced degree in art history or a related field is
preferred, as is experience working in a museum setting. Finalist
candidates will be required to successfully complete a background
check.

Assistant Editor, National Gallery of Art, Publishing Office
The assistant editor provides editorial and administrative support for publications related to the National Gallery of Art (NGA) Web site, the Systematic Catalogue of the Collections, and the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts. Edits and proofreads short texts and checks layouts for Web and print. Collects and organizes images and edits captions and permissions information; maintains schedules with authors and editors; and organizes meetings and communicates with authors, editors, and freelancers. Participates in the Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative (OSCI); works with various NGA departments to develop content for the Web; assists designers in Web feature development; and reports and replies to Web visitor comments.
The position requires print and Web skills and the ability to balance tasks and priorities in order to meet publishing deadlines. Specific requirements include: excellent command of English usage, grammar, and spelling; knowledge of editorial standards of consistency, style, basic fact checking, and clear writing; experience in basic copy editing and proofreading following guidelines of the Chicago Manual of Style; familiarity with HTML, CSS coding, and digital workflows; and skill in the unique aspects of editing and writing for the Web and for Web audiences. General knowledge of the arts as well as knowledge of one or more foreign languages (preferably Italian, French, or German) are also desirable.
