Freelance Part-Time Copy Editor

The American Society for Aesthetics is seeking an experienced, part-time freelance copy editor for a new online graduate journal in philosophy called the American Society for Aesthetics Graduate E-journal (ASAGE). ASAGE takes a theoretical and interdisciplinary approach to the arts and matters of aesthetic interest. This journal publishes high-caliber work in those areas, written by graduate students. In addition, ASAGE publishes book reviews of recently published works in aesthetics.

This academic journal will be published twice a year, with a third issue appearing every second year. Each standard issue will contain up to four articles of a maximum of 3,000 words in length, and up to two book reviews of no more than 1,000 words each. Each article (excluding book reviews) will be accompanied by an abstract of up to 250 words, for a total of approximately 15,000 words per issue. The journal will be formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style, and the successful applicant will be proficient with Microsoft Word's commenting and track-changes tools. The copy editor reports directly to the editor. Compensation will be between $2.85 and $3.90 per typeset page, commensurate with the successful candidate's experience and education. All levels of applicants are welcome, but those with academic journal experience and/or an education in philosophy or the arts are preferred. Telecommuting is expected.

Assistant Editor

The Philadelphia Museum of Art has a newly created position of Assistant Editor in the Publishing Department. Seeking a professional with a background in editing scholarly manuscripts, including exhibition and collection catalogues. Three to five years of editorial experience in art-museum book publishing required, with strong skills in coordinating illustrative material with scholarly text and in interacting successfully with authors, curators, designers, production staff, and freelancers. Must be flexible, able to work independently to meet rigid deadlines, and willing to carry out other editorial and administrative duties as assigned. Meticulous attention to detail, well-developed organizational talents, and the ability to edit electronically are essential. Publishing is a small department where editors are directly responsible for all stages of book production, including project development, editing, proofreading, design review, and blueline approval.

Assistant Editor

The Menil Collection is seeking an assistant editor to support the museum publisher in the development and production of exhibition catalogues, collections monographs, ephemeral publications, and wall labels, and with the management and distribution of Menil titles. The assistant editor’s responsibilities include researching, editing, proofreading, and fact-checking book content; gathering and organizing research materials for authors, including photographic materials; creating and maintaining production schedules; managing ephemeral publications; updating and maintaining the museum style guide; overseeing book inventory and internal distribution; and assisting with day-to-day responsibilities of the department.

Qualifications: A master’s degree in English or art history or two to four years’ related editing experience is preferred. Excellent writing, editing, research, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; meticulous attention to detail; strong familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition; and a general knowledge of art history are required.

Considered one of the most important privately assembled collections of the twentieth century, The Menil Collection houses approximately 16,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, and rare books. In addition to masterpieces of the twentieth century¾ including significant Surrealist holdings¾ the museum is well represented with works from antiquity; Byzantium and the medieval period; and cultures of Africa, Oceania, and the American Pacific Northwest.
